Staffordshire’s libraries are throwing down this year’s reading gauntlet to youngsters across in the region to take on the  Staffordshire  Summer Reading Challenge, which this year has a ‘Creepy House’ theme.

The annual event designed to encourage an early interest in literature will be launched in libraries across the county on Saturday 13 July with exciting events happening across most libraries over the summer.

Children aged four to 11 will be able to find out about the 2013 challenge at their local library from this weekend, which this year involves reading six books during their summer holidays, collecting stickers along the way and receiving a medal and certificate upon completion.

Youngsters who sign up on the day or at their local library will receive a free starter pack and details of how to access the ‘Creepy House’ website packed with fun activities and features.

Special events and activities are also programmed to run alongside the scheme – which include:

  • Tales That Time Forgot Theatre Show 11am & 2pm at Burton Library on Sat 13 July
  • Creepy House Cartoon Workshop Silverdale Library Sat 13 July

The nationwide scheme is pioneered  by the Reading Agency and widely encouraged in Staffordshire.   Last year over 13,000 Staffordshire youngsters signed up for the annual scheme designed to keep children reading during the long summer break.

Mike Lawrence, Cabinet Member responsible for Libraries at Staffordshire County Council said:

[blockquote]The Challenge has proved to be incredibly popular with the county’s youngsters over the years, and we’re hoping that a record number will get involved in this year’s “Creepy House” activities. [/blockquote]

The Staffordshire  Summer Reading Challenge not only banishes the boredom without breaking the bank, but also creates a real buzz around reading for fun. Children will be able to sign up for the challenge at their local Staffordshire library and will receive full instructions and the free starter pack.
