Artist Andrew Burton opens a showcase exhibition of work from a fascinating art residency project called BROWNFIELD at the Airspace Gallery in Stoke on Trent on July 16 to 23 2014. The showcase will focus on a set of pieces of art and sculpture that re-imagines what could occupy some of Staffordshire’s derelict and unused brownfield sites.
Andrew’s works have previoulsy included sculptures made out of the dismantled pieces of his previous works, often brick materials. This ‘build – dismantle – build again’ style works extremely well with and echoes the life cyle of a typical brownfiield site, with the creation, destruction and eventual re-use of these plots of derelict land.
Much of Andrew Burton’s work is simply breathtaking – such as the pictured ‘Things Fall Apart’, created as part of the 2008 World Congress of Archaeology. The decay of the ‘found and reclaimed’ masonry echo what it was before, while at the same creates stunning new naturalistic, organic looking monuments out of the manmade building materials.
You can catch the showcase of Burton’s residency in Staffordshire at Airspace Gallery 4 Broad Street, City Centre, Stoke-on-Trent, ST1 4HL from 16th-23rd July with a opening previews on 16th JULY 6pm-8pm
