Come and see some unusual reminders of how the local landscape has been formed and influenced in Links to a Landscape exhibition at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, featuring a variety of objects which have not been on display before.
The varied landscapes of North Staffordshire have been determined by a range of factors from a geological history of over 300 million years to the influence of Victorian exploration. Links to the distant and recent past have created what exists today.
This exhibition highlights this changing landscape with artefacts which illustrate this transformation over time. They include an Etruscan cremation chest made from volcanic stone dated from possibly 20BC-130AD and watercolour paintings by Reginald Haggar of the local landscape.
Nature continues to influence our cultural landscape by providing inspiration to create sculptures, paintings, photographs and literature. A falling leaf or an idyllic scene can give rise to works of contemporary art. This is illustrated with sculptural works by Gilbert Ledward and ceramics by Edmund de Waal.
