Two young Staffordshire poets have won prizes for themselves and for their school in the first ever ‘I Love Staffordshire’ poetry competition
380 young budding local poets enter the contest, organised by Enjoy Staffordshire and Staffordshire Libraries as part of this year’s Staffordshire Day celebrations.
Rebecca Lockwood, aged 16 from Cannock won the 11-16 years category with her poem entitled ‘The Stag and I’. She wins a workskop for her school Cannock Chase High with acclaimed performance poet Giovanni Esposito ( in main picture and on Twitter @SpozPoet ).
The under 11’s category was won by Honor Sutton (pictured) aged 9 from Stafford with her poem ‘Staffordshire, My Favourite Place To Be’. She wins a trip for her entire class to Trentham Monkey Forest plus £50 to spend for herself.
The judges, which included Staffordshire’s Poet Laureate Bert Flitcroft and the Young Poet Laureate for Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Isobel Horsley were impressed with the quality of the winning poems.
Also judging were Poetry on Loan Co-ordinator Brenda Read-Brown, and Terry Heath from Staffordshire Libraries
11- to 16s Winner Rebecca, said:
“I am eternally delighted and overwhelmed to have won the Staffordshire Day poetry competition, poetry has the ability to bring people together from all walks of life and I cannot thank Staffordshire Libraries enough for allowing me to contribute to the beauty of it.”
