Not long left to enjoy the delights of the award winning Educating Rita performed by the Professional Lichfield Garrick Rep Company.
Written by Willy Russell the play follows the trials and tribulations of Liverpudlian lass Rita, who decides to spread her working class wings and explore her interest in literature and writing by attending Open University classes as a mature student. Battling with the realities of a bleak and emotionally draining family life, and mentored along the way by a her disillusioned and cynical university lecturer, the play still manages to unearth magical comedy moments throughout, in a way that only the brilliant writer Willy Russell can.
As important as the script though is the direction and the delivery by the two lead actors, and clearly many people may already be familiar with the film roles being outstandingly portrayed by Michael Caine and Julie Walters Fortunately here Frank played by Tom Roberts and Rita by Tupele Dorgu manage to bring their own touch of magic to the popular play and both have been creating the right kind of buzz in Staffordshire.
The play continues its run until June 22.
