Back To The Drawing Board

Staffordshire Arts

A fascinating exhibition and series of events celebrating the the long and remarkable creative lives of Pat Albeck and Peter Rice is to take place at Keele University Art Gallery from 9 November 2016

Pat Albeck is one of the leading textile designers in modern Britain. Having graduated from The Royal College of Art in the fifties, Pat became well-known for producing over 300 tea towel designs for the National Trust as well as countless fashion and furnishing prints.

Peter Rice was one of the preeminent stage and costume designers in modern British opera and theatre.  And although it was not unusual for a designer to take charge of both sets and costumes, Rice was unusually successful at both. and his work graced Opera Holland Park, the Royal Ballet, the Royal Opera House and many West End theatre.  He passed away aged 87 in December 2015

The exhibition will explore a fascinating family dynamic, for Pat and Peter are the parents of Matthew Rice, husband and business partner of Staffordshire ceramicist and designer Emma Bridgwater.

Matthew is a gifted writer, designer and artist with a passion for architectual history and of course Emma Brigwater is famously leading a ceramics revival in Stoke-on-Trent.
