If the UK government have their way, under new proposals ‘arts and crafts’ will no longer be recognised as a creative industry, and will be excluded from the official UK measurement of what is and what isn’t a creative profession.
The proposed change is part of a review of the UK’s creative industries set out by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and outlined in a new consultation. The consultation, available here, suggests that although craft occupations have a creative element, they are more focussed on manufacturing processes, and therefore will be dropped from the official classification list.
So now the list includes publishing, film, TV, photography, music, performing, visual arts, advertising, marketing, design, fashion and architecture and even includes some IT, software and computer services. But arts and crafts are no longer included.

What do you think of the plans to wholly discount arts and crafts from the thriving creative industry sector? We think we know – but would love to hear your view anyway!!
More importantly the consultation on the proposals ends June 14 – you can have your voice heard here
Maker sure you Sign the ePetition (100,000 signatures needs for it to be debated in parliament) and respond to the consultation – deadline 8 June 2013
